Introduction The name Orissa is derived from the Sanskrit Odravishya or Odra Desa. Both Pali and Sansakrit literature mention the Odra people as Oddaka and Odrahrespectively. Orissa was variously known in the past as Utkal, Odra, Kangoda, Kosal etc. The State Orissa extends from 170, 49 N to 220, 34 N latitude and from 810, 28 E to 870 , 29 E longitude in the eastern Coast of India. The provisional population of Orissa revealed by 2001 Census is 3, 15, 12, 870 out of which males are 1, 54, 79, 904 and females are 1, 55,32,166 respectively. It is a land of hills, forests and great rivers. To its north are West Bengal and Bihar. Mahanadi is the most important rivers of this state. The major three religious Communities of the state are Hindu, Christians and Muslims with a significant concentration of Hindus. The state is having 48.55% literacy in comparison to 52.11% in the National level as per 2001 Census.
According to National Policy in Education, 1986 a third district level institution namely District Institue of Education and Training (D.I.E.T) came into force for the improvement of Elementary Education. So thirteen such institutions were created out of which D.I.E.T khordha is one of them.
